Annette Funicello danced in an amateur production at Fullerton in California, of Swan Lake when Walt Disney found her. It was only 13 at the time. The Funicello's Mickey Mouse Club teammates were in a state of dismay at the time Funicello joined her cast later in the first season of the series, and not having to audition. Disney made the right decision as she quickly rose to become The Mickey Mouse Club's best performer, with her personal Adventures in Dairyland storyline. Funicello's potential to become a teenage star was quickly realized. Disney hired Tutti Camerata an established arranger to assist her in launching her recording career. Annette, however, was not too thrilled about Funicello singing. Funicello was a fan of making albums, and she worked alongside Camerata who was one the only forty-something arranging professionals of that era, who knew the foundations of early music. Annette Sings Anka is the album that marked the start of her improvement. It was perhaps the first rock-songwriter LP. Funicello was featured on screen in Beach Party which was one of five hugely popular beach film series, which often featured Frankie Avalon. Although produced by AIP the scripts were personally examined and endorsed by Walt Disney, in order to preserve Annette's spotless image.
