O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. She made it into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm about her performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judge. However, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performances were consistent that he never fell into the top 3. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced into the final two of the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
